What college students need to know about the stimulus relief check

The question at the forefront of many college students’ minds right now is “will I get a relief check?” Depending upon your tax filing status, the answer to that question can be complicated.

Most students aged 18 to 24 will not receive a relief check due to their status as dependents. The fact is, you can’t get a payment if someone claims you as a dependent, even if you’re an adult.

However, if you’re a single, non-dependent adult, with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less, you should receive $1,200. Married couples earning $150,000 or less with no children will receive $2,400. Above those income figures, the payment decreases.

The good news is that, even if you are ineligible for a stimulus check, you have financial aid options. Governor Phil Murphy recently announced that the deadline for a renewal of state tuition aid for the 2020-2021 academic year has been extended from April 15 to June 1. This means you have more time to complete and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

And, if you’re a Rowan College at Burlington County student, you stand to benefit from even more support, financial and otherwise. Our financial aid office is available for virtual appointments to assist with payment options and to answer questions. For payment plan accommodations, please contact studentaccounts@rcbc.edu. We’ve kept our Food Pantry open to students in need while ramping up safety precautions. If you’re in need of academic advising or tutoring, we are taking virtual appointments. We’ve also extended our withdrawal date for spring courses to May 1.

Bottom line: we’re still here for you, and we’ll continue to work toward helping you achieve your goals during this difficult time.
