During her time at Rowan College at Burlington County, D’Jana Wyllis served as club officer of both the Math Club and Phi Theta Kappa honor society, participated in RCBC’s undergraduate research program, earned recognition as valedictorian of her class and was named among the top community college scholars in the country.
So, where is she now? After completing her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Columbia University, Wyllis has set her sights on earning a PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware in the hopes of pursuing a pharmaceutical career.
“If I had to reflect on my transitions over the years, the one thing I’ve learned is to expect the unexpected and to not allow new trials to intimidate me,” Wyllis shared. “I was faced with some difficulties in my transition to Columbia, but I came to terms with the idea that foreseeing problems is not as important as the manner in which you deal with them. So I learned to take my time, one step at a time, and I tried my best to not be overwhelmed, so I could better deal with them.”
Regardless of the challenges she faced, D’Jana commented that RCBC played a crucial role in preparing her for the next steps in her education.
“RCBC was that big step I took where I was exposed to materials and inspiration from faculty which allowed my interests to develop over time,” Wyllis said. “I was really reserved when I had just entered RCBC, but getting involved with Phi Theta Kappa and doing research with Professor Sherlock were major stepping stones for me.”
As she reflects on her past while looking toward the future, Wyllis emphasizes that it’s important for students to participate and enjoy the moment.
“Time flies so fast; just try your best to enjoy every moment of your time there (at RCBC) because pursuing a degree in something you’re passionate about should be a fun learning experience,” Wyllis said. “Also, get involved! There are so many activities on campus to be a part of that are worth making time for in your schedule -- explore them.”
Long term, Wyllis sees herself working in some capacity in the pharmaceutical industry. She’s hoping that her research over the next few years will help shape her vision for the future.
