Jillian Volpe

After 15 years as a hairstylist, Jillian Volpe felt she could do more to help people but was hesitant to enroll in college. Volpe overcame her concerns and became so involved at Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC) that she earned a seat on the college’s Board of Trustees as alumni trustee after graduating with an Associate of Science degree in May.

Prior to enrolling at RCBC in 2017, Jillian graduated from the cosmetology program at Burlington County Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Medford, New Jersey, and was a practicing hairstylist for 15 years. However, in the back of her mind, she always knew that she wanted to do something even more to help people.

“I’d always wanted to pursue a degree in nursing because I love taking care of people. However, I was nervous about putting myself in debt to go to school,” Volpe recalled.

Due to RCBC’s affordability, however, Jillian was happy to report that she did not incur debt. During her time at the college, she was a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), Chi Alpha Epsilon, the honor society for students in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program, and Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community college students. She also became the EOF peer counselor as a student worker.

“I didn't expect to be so involved while attending RCBC, but I was so thankful to be in EOF and for the chance to be the peer counselor,” Volpe said.

Volpe officially joined the board at its August 20 meeting and will serve through the 2019-2020 academic year. Each year, a member of the college’s most recent graduating class serves as alumni trustee.

During her free time, Jillian enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephews, going to the shore, attending concerts and she still finds time to cut hair at her home. She plans to continue in her pursuit of a nursing degree and is excited to attend Thomas Jefferson University’s College of Nursing this fall.

“I couldn’t let the fear of student loan debt keep me from a career I’ve wanted for so long,” Volpe said.

Jillian's story is part of RCBC’s 50 stories for 50 years. In honor of the college’s 50th anniversary, RCBC is profiling students, faculty, administrators, alumni and the college community.
