Temperatures were high, but so were spirits on July 1 during Rowan College at Burlington County’s first-ever Global Soccer Games watch party. Held at RCBC’s Mount Laurel campus, over 400 community members attended, showing their fervent support for the United States as they took on Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“The FIFA World Cup 26™ Watch Party showcased the power of collaboration and community,” said Jarrett Kealey, Dean of Advising & Career Development at RCBC. “We’re sincerely grateful to Visit South Jersey, Burlington County, the Burlington County Bridge Commission, the Burlington County Department of Economic Development, and our many partners for helping create such a memorable evening. Seeing our campus filled with first-time visitors, families, soccer fans, and community members enjoying the match together reflected exactly what RCBC strives to be—a welcoming place where people can connect, learn, and celebrate.”
Despite an extreme heat warning due to temperatures over 95℉ during the day’s first match, spectators quickly packed the quad's lawn for the later US game as the sun set and temperatures cooled. They lounged in lawn chairs and sprawled on blankets with friends and family before the big screen.
"It was especially gratifying to hear so many guests tell us this was their first visit to RCBC and that they were impressed by our beautiful campus and the outstanding resources available to students," said Acting President Dr. David Spang. "Our staff did a remarkable job creating a welcoming atmosphere and highlighting what makes RCBC such a special place. We're already exploring future community events that will continue to open our doors and strengthen our connection with Burlington County."
Inflatables and large open areas for soccer led to a fun time for many young guests, who were excited for the match to start. Any hungry guests could enjoy a bite at any of the food trucks. To stay cool during the pre-match hustle and bustle, free water and RCBC-branded cooling towels and water were handed out throughout the night.
Support from Visit South Jersey and Burlington County officials helped the night go off without a hitch. Visit SJ and the Burlington County Parks system set up their own booths around the quad, where attendees could earn free swag and learn more information about the organizations.
Although Team USA has been knocked out of the tournament since the match, July 1st’s game was an exciting bout that ended in a 2-0 victory for the home team, sending them to the round of 16. As the game came to a close around 10 pm, spectators were able to drive home happy.
“We had an amazing experience at the RCBC watch party,” said attendees Kelly Valente and David Iacono. “Although the weather was hot, there were cooling stations with a wide variety of food trucks and a giant screen TV, lots of fun giveaways, and a rocking DJ. “It was such a great time, the crowd was so enthusiastic, and the emcee was a hoot,” said attendee Nicholas Fasenmyer. “The food was fantastic, and it doesn't hurt that we won the game. But my favorite part had to be Barry the Baron going around and dancing with the kids!”
