Geographic Information System (GIS)

A geographic information system is a computer based system that allows users to capture, store, analyze, and display geographic data. The data that can be stored within a GIS represents a particular feature or phenomenon, such as municipal or county boundaries, roads, rivers, fire hydrants, buildings, or even aerial photographs. These data are displayed in layers within a GIS and a user can add layers to the display to develop a comprehensive view of a particular area.

While the features presented within a GIS reflect their actual real-world location, they are also associated with data that can aid users in their understanding of these features. Each feature includes a data table that consists of specific characteristics or attributes about the features. The inclusion of the data provides a greater, more inclusive view of any given area.

A GIS can be used to analyze data in numerous ways. Technicians can study and analyze the distribution of a particular feature, identify best routes for navigation, find associations between different features and many other types of analysis.
