Three-sport Lady Baron Shayna Wiggins receives athletic "Woman of the Year" award
Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC) Lady Baron Shayna Wiggins, of Delran, earned Woman of the Year distinction by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NJAIA).
Award recipients from New Jersey colleges and universities were named after the NJAIA’s annual awards luncheon for National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which was officially celebrated on Feb. 1.
Woman of the Year awards are based on athletic excellence, academic success and community service.
“Shayna has made a significant impact on our department in her two years here at RCBC,” RCBC Athletics Director Heather Conger said. “Not only has she started on three of our women's sports programs and captained our softball team, she has done it all while excelling in the classroom. Wiggins epitomizes what we are looking for in a Baron student-athlete.”
Wiggins, a graduate of Delran High School, has participated in the Lady Barons soccer, basketball and softball teams, and will finish her last season as a captain and shortstop on the softball team. During her time as a Lady Baron, both the softball and basketball teams had an above 500 record, with the softball team finishing 18-17 and the basketball team finishing 12-11. The basketball team also went to the Region XIX Tournament.
"Being able to participate in three sports in college has been an incredible opportunity, my teammates and coaches have made it unforgettable," Wiggins said.
The 31st anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sport Day celebrates the athletic achievements of women and the positive well-being associated with sports participation, while also recognizing the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
