Soccer players shutout competition to take top honors in Division I Region XIX awards

Rowan College at Burlington County’s soccer players captured post-season Division I Region XIX and Division I Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) honors, including both Division I Region XIX top Player of the Year titles, which went to Lady Baron Valyntyna Forrest and men’s Mario Arroyo.   

Player of the Year Valyntyna Forrest, of Hainesport, is a defender in her second year with the team. In addition to being named Player of the Year for the Region, she was named to the First Team for 2017 Division I Women’s Soccer All Region XIX and 2017 Division I Women’s Soccer All GSAC. Her sophomore midfielder teammate Lauren Tomei, of Chesterfield, was also named to both First Teams. Riverside resident, Kenzee Hudson, a sophomore midfielder, took Second Team Region XIX and GSAC honors. Freshman defender Allison Lyons, of Tabernacle, was named to the GSAC’s Second Team.

The Lady Barons soccer team finished their regular season with an 11-4 record to enter to the Region XIX tournament as the No. 2 seed. They were defeated by Sussex County Community College in the Region XIX semi-final.

Player of the Year Mario Arroyo, of Madrid, Spain, is a forward in his first year with the Barons. He was also named to the First Team for 2017 Division I Men’s Soccer All Region XIX and 2017 Division I Men’s Soccer All GSAC, along with Barons’ defender and sophomore Trenton Hall, of Mount Holly. Second Team Region XIX honors went to Barons’ freshman midfielder Gerald Cubero, of Boundbrook, NJ.

The men also finished their regular season 11-4 to enter the Region XIX tournament as the No. 4 seed. They were knocked out by Essex County College in the Region semi-final.
