RCBC Alternative Energy grad lands job in solar industry

Brandon Tomei

Brandon Tomei, age 21, earned two associate degrees from RCBC – one in Entertainment Technologies and the other in Alternative Energy Technologies.

While finishing his first RCBC degree in Entertainment Technologies, Brandon took two courses in Sustainability, which covered issues such as climate change. He saw an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. After consulting with Dr. Bob Brzozowski, program coordinator for RCBC’s AAS in Alternative Energy Technologies, they jointly developed a plan whereby Brandon could complete the second degree with just one additional year.

After graduating in May, Brandon landed an interview with Vivint Solar, a nationally recognized solar energy installation company. Vivint liked his alternative energy background and offered him a job as a Site Surveyor, which involves visiting a customer’s site to verify the feasibility of an initial proposed design. This includes documenting structural and electrical attributes of the site, as well as getting on the homeowner’s roof to “chalk-out” the proposed design (solar panel layout) to make sure it will fit. Brandon transfers details from the site visit to the CAD (computer-aided design) team to work up a final design.

Brandon is enjoying his new job, which entails working outdoors and traveling both locally and occasionally out-of-state. ”No two days are the same,” he said.
