RCBC Fashion students visit Cotton Incorporated in NYC

RCBC students visited Cotton Incorporated’s Consumer Marketing Headquarters in NYC for the first time, and it already felt like home.

Students from FAD135 Introduction to Textiles are required to join “Cotton University,” an educational website sponsored by Cotton Inc.

“By the time we went to Cotton Incorporated, I had already visited the website dozens of times for fabric and fiber information, as well as the latest updates on trends and innovative research,” said RCBC student Karlee Dean.  

Lauren Williams, the trend analyst at Cotton Inc., treated the students to a “behind-the-scenes” look at fabric and color trending. The presentation consisted of a trend presentation called “Color and Surface.” The five trends incorporated lifestyle, art, consumerism, color palettes and an array of visually exciting cotton-rich fabrics. The Cotton Inc. trend team travel to diverse locations around the world searching for unique fabric, global fashion trends and visiting local clothing stores.

After the presentation, Williams discussed her own career path, job opportunities and her next trip to Asia to find new and exciting fashion trends for the next seasonal presentation.

A Day at Macy’s Merchandising Group (MMG)

RCBC Fashion Design students were invited by special invitation to visit the Home Textile Design Department of MMG. Once a year, the RCBC Fashion Design students are given this opportunity to observe the design offices and meet the designers and product development team.

Students were shown designer inspiration boards, CAD art, and package development books that are kept as records for every design element that goes into each product. Designers receive first “strike-offs,” known as early samples, from overseas factories. They review for quality, fabric and color, and make comments before sending them out for additional samples to be ready for “Buy Week” meetings. Lastly, the MMG Product Development Team discussed the product from a merchandising angle, including costs, factories and “best sellers.”

By taking advantage of this industry-related trip, the students gained a better understanding of the fashion-related courses at RCBC that are necessary to achieve their goals.

Textile Workshop at Philadelphia University

Textiles

Eighteen fashion students from RCBC were invited to a customized workshop in the Textile Department at Philadelphia University on Friday, Nov. 11.

Lead by Department Director Marcia Weiss, the students first received a tour of the department’s facilities and a short overview of careers within the textile industry. The students were then divided into three groups where they experienced a hands-on workshop. After choosing spools of their favorite colors, the knitting group made scarves and accessories. The weaving group had a chance to work the floor looms practicing plain and twill weaves. They also brought original designs that were scanned into the textile software program and woven in a few short minutes on the Jacquard looms. The last group put their original hand drawn flowers into a full repeat with color and texture to get it ready for digital printing on a variety of fabrics.

Sophomore Shadowing Day Hosted by Burlington Stores

This past April six students from the RCBC Fashion Product Merchandising Program were chosen to participate in a very special event hosted by Burlington Stores. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the students had the opportunity to network with recruiters, speak to buyers, planners, and other employees.

The students participated in a simulated buying game that replaces the actual Burlington Stores buying process. Team RCBC reviewed products for quality, style, and price. Each team presented their final evaluation for their product and it was revealed that the Burlington Stores Buyers had the same buying plans as our students.  The day ended with a visit to the photo department as well as new connections and information about exciting careers at Burlington Stores.

RCBC Fashion Design and Merchandising students spend a day in NYC

On Nov. 11, 2015, RCBC students in the FAD135 Intro to Textiles and FAD107 Fashion Drawing classes were treated to a day in NYC.

The jammed-packed day began with a special invitation by the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Fashion Production Management Department Director Mario Federici. He spoke to the students about careers within this field and the types of classes required for the major.

Students were also invited to visit an upper-level textiles class taught by the author of the book used in RCBC’s FAD135. Author and Professor Ingrid Johnson allowed RCBC students to observe her class and during her lecture she revealed that she had graduated from what was then Burlington County College more than 25 years ago. RCBC students also visited labs for color dyeing and fabric testing. A demonstration of body scanning equipment taught students how the technology could be used in the future for a virtual shopping experience.

After lunch, the students were invited once again to Macy’s Merchandising Group Corporate Design Offices. This year, the Home Textiles Technical Designer gave a presentation on the daily routine of a Technical Designer. Gisela Nelson from the Technical Design Department spoke about how she works very closely with the designers and overseas offices to ensure each garment is thoroughly inspected. In fact, she mentioned that each garment a person wears has probably been reviewed at least four times before it reaches the store for purchasing. Garment samples were displayed and she detailed and demonstrated how to thoroughly inspect a garment. The students were amazed at how much detail and observation goes into one garment.

From the Technical Design Department, the students walked across the hall to Home Textile Design. Sue Toporowski, the Vice President of the department, spoke to the students about the role of the Designers and CAD artists. Her team of talented designers walked the students through each step of designing a product from presenting a concept and ideas on large boards to product development teams and buyers, to the actual technical packages that designers send out for production. Just about everyone from the product team, technical design and overseas manufacturers, gets a duplicate copy of every detail of this package that includes drawings, color samples,  fabric techniques, and standards, as well as textile art work. The CAD department explained their role in supporting the designers.

The last stop in show rooms was the perfectly styled beds that were designed a season earlier. A presentation was given by the Product Development Manager. She explained her role working alongside designers, buyers and very closely with the overseas manufacturers creating costs and production timelines.

With a little time left, the students walked to Elegant Fabrics on 40th Street. There they had the opportunity to collect fabric swatches that will be used for their final design projects.

 

Nordstrom of Cherry Hill Opens Doors to Fashion Students at RCBC for a “Behind the Scenes” Visit

On March 3, RCBC Fashion Design and Merchandising students were invited to the luxury retailer Nordstrom in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Debra Hartman, Store Manager, began the presentation by discussing her role in managing the Cherry Hill store and her interaction with the employees as well as customer relationships. Students learned about her passion for all areas of the fashion industry and the many career paths and job advancements Nordstrom offers their employees.

An early morning tour of the store allowed students to get a glimpse of what happens before the store actually opens. Carin Colgan, Visual Manager, led the tour and explained how each morning the visual merchandising team styles the floor mannequins. The team is responsible for everything from “floor to ceiling” and each floor is “picture perfect” when the customers arrive.

The Personal Stylist Manager Paula Haughey and Design Specialist Vincent Ortiz spoke about understanding their customers and how important it is know the current fashion trends, colors of the season and fabric content. They shared valuable information on putting together an outfit from head to toe and gave the students insight into how their incredible tailoring department can reconstruct just about any garment to fit the customers.
