RCBC to close Pemberton pool by August 15

Rowan College at Burlington County (RBCB) will close the pool at the Pemberton Campus by August 15, 2019.

RCBC’s primary focus and mission are to provide high-quality education at an affordable price. The college has concluded that operating an aquatics program is not in the best interest of our students. As we work on the fiscal year 2019-2020 budget, we cannot expect our students to subsidize the aquatics program especially considering the fiscal challenges we all face.

Keeping with the spirit of our mission and students, the college remains intent on identifying a responsible owner or developer who will make a positive contribution to the community. In order to move ahead with another attempt to transition the property, it is critical to resolve the issues relating to the outstanding programs on the campus.

The college has been clear about its intent to close the pool in 2019. We will continue to communicate with our partners so they can plan for the upcoming year.

We are also reaching out to other facilities including the Burlington County Chamber of Commerce to help identify opportunities for our aquatics patrons at other pool facilities throughout the county such as the Burlington County Institute of Technology, Special Services District and the YMCA.

In summary, this decision allows us to minimize costs for students, transition our athletic programs closer to the Mount Laurel Campus and remove an obstacle toward developing a new use for the Pemberton Campus that will benefit the college and surrounding communities.

After nearly half a century, we know that the aquatics program has had an impact on many lives. We empathize with and appreciate everyone who feels so strongly about the aquatics facility and thank you for using our facility over the years.
